With the first month of the year nearly over, BMW has announced a raft of updates for the M4 and the BMW Series 4.

BMW M4 updates

More power for the BMW M4 Competition xDrive

One of the headline changes is a power increase for the M4 Competition xDrive - and only for this four-wheel-drive version - which gains 20 cv, taking it to 530 cv.

The rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition and the M4 keep the same outputs as before, delivering 510 cv and 480 cv respectively. Both Competition versions continue to be offered exclusively with the eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox, while the M4 remains the only one available with a six-speed manual.

New lighting design and revised interior tech

Alongside the extra power for the range-topping BMW M4 variant, this update also brings redesigned front and rear light clusters.

Up front, LED lighting is now standard equipment. At the rear, buyers can optionally specify laser-technology light clusters, as seen on the M4 CSL.

Inside the refreshed BMW M4, the sports seats remain, with the option to choose an even more track-focused set finished in carbon fibre. The cabin materials have also been revised.

The instrument panel and the infotainment touchscreen continue to sit within the familiar horizontally oriented curved display used in other BMW models. It now runs BMW Operating System 8.5.

The remaining BMW Series 4 line-up

Beyond BMW M’s sportier versions, the German manufacturer has also updated the rest of the range - well, almost all of it, as the Gran Coupé has not been included.

The same updated styling details introduced on the M4 are also applied to the BMW Series 4. In other words, there is a new design for both the front and rear lights, with the rear units again available as an option with laser technology.

In addition, the “refreshed” BMW Series 4 gains new exterior paint colours, newly designed alloy wheels, and larger exhaust outlets on M Sport versions.

In the BMW Series 4 cabin, the biggest change is the redesigned central air vents, as on the M4, featuring new controls - both physical and touch-operated - plus integrated ambient lighting. On the central touchscreen display, BMW Operating System 8.5 is now also included.

When does it arrive?

The updated BMW Series 4 variants - Coupé, Cabrio and M4 - are already available to order. However, production at the Dingolfing plant and the arrival of the first cars on the market are only scheduled for next March. Until then, here are the range prices:
