After 1.6 million kilometres driven, Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” technology is finally available in Europe. The Netherlands is the first country to benefit, and the manufacturer is already working to secure approval elsewhere.

The Netherlands becomes the first European country to get Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

For some time now in the United States, Tesla has offered its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology to electric-car drivers. As a reminder, it enables Teslas to drive themselves under a driver’s supervision, with only minimal input required from the person behind the wheel. And, for the first time, this Tesla service is now being offered in a European country.

Tesla has been working for a while with the Dutch regulator to obtain permission to roll out Full Self-Driving (Supervised). This weekend, Elon Musk’s company finally received the green light from the authorities, allowing it to offer its autonomous-driving technology in a first European market. On X, Tesla also posted a video showing the first customers using this new service in Europe.

At the moment, France is therefore not yet included. However, Tesla is already pursuing similar authorisations in other European countries. And France is indeed among the countries where trials of the technology are already taking place.

Tesla highlights the strict validation process behind approval for Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

To underline the reliability of its technology, Tesla points to the lengthy and rigorous process that led to its validation in the Netherlands. In particular, the manufacturer says that 1.6 million kilometres have already been covered by Teslas with this feature switched on. In addition, more than 13,000 people have already been able to try the technology from the front passenger seat in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

Tesla also claims that, as well as lowering the everyday stress experienced by drivers, its autonomous-driving technology would make collisions up to 7 times less likely. Nevertheless, even while promoting the strengths of this proven technology, the manufacturer reiterates that the driver remains responsible for how their Tesla is used at all times.

How Full Self-Driving (Supervised) works and how it is priced

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) relies on cameras fitted around the outside of the vehicle and on artificial intelligence to allow Teslas to navigate roads in a near-autonomous way. In countries where it is offered, Tesla’s autonomous driving is sold as a subscription. And the US price is $99 per month.
