Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 revealed: 325 hp and 7min46,13s at the Nürburgring

Just over a week has passed since Volkswagen previewed its most powerful Golf GTI to date by publishing the time it needed to complete the 20.832 km Nürburgring-Nordschleife: 7min46,13s.

The wait is now over. During the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, Volkswagen confirmed the final specifications for the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50. As the name suggests, it has been created to mark 50 years of the GTI badge - a set of letters that, half a century ago, went on to define what the hot hatch class would become.

That is why this is not just another performance model; this is genuine automotive "royalty".

Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap time for the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50

Volkswagen’s teaser focused on a single headline number: a 7min46,13s lap of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (20.832 km), underlining the intent behind this anniversary GTI.

Most powerful Golf GTI ever

No detours: under the bonnet sits the familiar 2.0 TSI (EA888) four-cylinder engine, but in this commemorative version it delivers an extra 60 hp and 50 Nm, rising from 265 hp and 370 Nm to 325 hp and 420 Nm.

As with every Golf GTI, power still goes to just two driven wheels - the front axle. For context, it ends up only 8 hp shy of the all-wheel-drive Golf R.

That additional "firepower" cuts the 0–100 km/h sprint to 5.5s (0.4s quicker than the "regular" GTI). Reaching 200 km/h takes around 17 seconds, and top speed is 270 km/h.

Chassis changes to handle the extra output

To cope with the power increase, the German hot hatch receives revisions to the chassis, the front limited-slip differential, and the steering. Ride height has also been adjusted: it sits 20 mm closer to the ground than the standard GTI set-up, and 5 mm lower than the GTI Clubsport.

Optional GTI-Performance Pack

If that still is not enough, Volkswagen is also offering an optional GTI-Performance Pack. Selecting it brings a more focused suspension tune for driving with "a knife between your teeth", along with Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres and 19-inch forged aluminium wheels. This tyre-and-wheel combination saves 2 kg per corner in unsprung mass. An Akrapovič titanium exhaust system is also included, which on its own cuts 11 kg.

When does it arrive?

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is due to reach the market in 2026, but pricing and the number of cars to be sold have not yet been disclosed - everything suggests it will be a limited-run edition.

The current Golf GTI Clubsport already costs more than €60,000, so the Edition 50 is expected to be priced higher still.
