Until recently, the Tesla Model X was the only model from the American brand that offered room for seven people. Later, the Model Y also gained an optional seven-seat layout. Even so, space in the third row remained tight.
That’s set to change with the upcoming Model Y L - a long-wheelbase version created primarily with the Chinese market in mind.
However, contrary to earlier expectations, this stretched variant may not be limited to China. There’s a real chance it could also be sold in Europe, and the test prototypes we “caught” near the Nürburgring circuit seem to back up that idea.
Model Y L is the new Model X in Europe?
It’s worth remembering that, since 30 July, the Tesla Model X has no longer been available to configure on the brand’s website. From that point on, sales have been restricted to cars still listed in inventory. Against that backdrop, it’s easy to see why this “stretched” Model Y is being viewed as a possible replacement for the Model X - offering a larger cabin and more usable space for rear seats.
Cabin layout and seating: 2+2+2 in the Tesla Model Y L
According to the information and images published last month by the MIIT (China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), the extra length provides enough room to fit three rows of seats in a 2+2+2 configuration.
Dimensions and what changes versus the standard Model Y
If the European version mirrors the Chinese specifications, the new Model Y L will be 186 mm longer (4976 mm) and will feature an increased wheelbase from 2890 mm to 3040 mm - an extra 150 mm.
From the charging prototypes we “caught”, you need a sharp eye to spot the differences compared with the regular version. The longer wheelbase shows up in the extended rear doors, and there also appears to be a higher roofline, likely intended to improve headroom for third-row occupants.
On the outside, the standout details include partially covered wheels similar to those seen in the MIIT images, plus a boot-lid spoiler that is larger and more pronounced than on standard Model Y models.
Range and expected arrival date
There is still no official confirmation that this version is heading to the European market, and the same uncertainty applies to its powertrain options. Even so, it’s known that the Tesla Model Y L due to be sold in China shares the same technical base as the Long Range all-wheel-drive version.
Powertrain, battery and WLTP range expectations
If Europe receives the same set-up, the SUV should use two electric motors (one per axle) delivering a combined 378 kW (514 hp), powered by a 75 kWh battery.
Because of the added weight - from 1992 kg to 2088 kg - and the impact on aerodynamics, it’s expected that range will come in slightly below the 586 km (WLTP) quoted for the standard version.
