Millions have been sold, they feature in dozens of models and are part of the daily lives of thousands of drivers in Portugal. Yet not everyone realises that the Stellantis PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines, despite their strong reputation for efficiency, fuel economy and wide availability, also carry a delicate technical history. This is especially true of units built between 2014 and 2022.
The issues mainly affect the EB2DT and EB2ADTS engines (the internal codes used for the PureTech 1.2 turbo) and some EB0 units (1.0 naturally aspirated), and are linked to engines produced between April 2014 and June 2022. According to Stellantis, engines manufactured after that date already include improvements that addressed the reported weaknesses and are therefore not affected.
In this table, we have gathered all Stellantis models that, between April 2014 and June 2022, may be covered by a recall operation or extended warranty:
There are other models using PureTech petrol engines, such as the Jeep Avenger or the FIAT 600, but they are not included in this group, as they already use the improved version of the engine introduced after June 2022.
In 2023, Stellantis introduced a hybrid variant that marked a new evolution of the PureTech engine: it no longer used a timing belt and switched to a timing chain. Find out more details:
What is the issue?
For several years now, reports have been mounting of abnormal oil consumption and premature timing belt failures. The latter is particularly sensitive because it runs immersed in oil - unlike conventional belts - and can deteriorate quietly, producing debris that clogs the lubrication circuits. In more serious cases, the engine may even fail completely.
In response to the number of cases, Stellantis adopted two measures:
- Warranty extension to 10 years or 175,000 km, applicable to customers who have strictly followed the maintenance schedule
- Retroactive compensation for repairs carried out between 2022 and 2024, provided the work was performed by authorised workshops and in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.
There is even an official online platform - stellantis-support.com - where customers can submit their cases, with supporting documents and prior registration.
The problem can be resolved
Despite the understandable frustration of many owners, it is worth making clear that not every engine will develop faults. When properly monitored, well maintained and with the belt replaced at the correct intervals (now brought forward to 60,000 km), PureTech units remain efficient engines.
In any case, Stellantis has announced that it will extend its compensation policy to European customers affected by problems with PureTech engines: this includes the previous-generation 1.0 and 1.2 units, also known as EB. This measure comes in addition to the extended warranty programme introduced in March 2024.
It is essential that any work follows the recommended procedures. Replacing the timing belt, for example, requires care with the type of oil used and thorough cleaning of the circuits - otherwise, the issue may return.
