Stellantis is recalling around 700,000 vehicles worldwide fitted with the 1.2 Turbo Hybrid 48V powertrain. In Portugal, the number of affected vehicles is around 16,000.
This engine is now one of Stellantis’ key mainstays, and it features across a wide spread of models from Peugeot, Citroën, FIAT, Alfa Romeo, Opel, DS Automobiles, Jeep and Lancia.
1.2 Turbo Hybrid 48V powertrain across Stellantis brands
The system is a 48 V mild-hybrid set-up that pairs the 1.2 Turbo petrol engine (with a timing chain) with an electric motor and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It first launched in 2023 via Peugeot, but it has since been rolled out rapidly across many more models from the group’s other brands.
What is the problem?
The issue identified is the possibility of contact between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the protective cup for the 48 V belt starter-generator rod. If these two components sit too close together or touch-especially when wet-this can create an electrical arc and a resulting thermal event (overheating) which, in the worst-case scenario, could lead to a risk of fire in the engine bay.
Stellantis has already stated that the corrective action is to “replace the protective cup for the 48 V belt starter-generator rod”. It also adds that it will “check and, if necessary, correct the distance between the Gasoline Particulate Filter pipe and the protective cup for the 48 V belt Starter-Generator rod”.
Owners have already started to be contacted
In Portugal, Stellantis also says it has begun contacting owners of affected vehicles and has already started carrying out the corrective action on the first vehicles, free of charge. The work is quick, taking approximately 30 minutes.
How to check if your vehicle is covered by the recall campaign
Do you have a model from the group with this powertrain? You can confirm whether your vehicle is included in this recall campaign via the Recall portal. If it is, bear in mind that responding to the recall is mandatory, and you may fail your next periodic inspection if you have not done so.
