If everything goes to plan, Mercedes-AMG is expected to unveil its next model in about a month - in June - and it is billed as a direct challenger to the Porsche Taycan: a 100% electric 4-door GT.
It is not yet clear whether it will replace the current petrol-powered GT 4-door - there are rumours suggesting both will be sold side by side, at least for a while - but the first teaser-style images leave no doubt that this all-new electric model has four doors.
The images also reveal huge wheels, flush-fitting door handles integrated into the bodywork, and lighting units with a three-pointed star light signature, similar to the new Mercedes-Benz CLA.
New platform and 1000 hp
Like the SL or the GT Coupé, this new offering will be AMG-only - it is not derived from any “Benz”. That approach is also reflected in the aluminium, 800 V AMG.EA (AMG Electric Architecture) platform that this electric GT 4-door will debut.
Axial-flux electric motors for the AMG GT 4-door
For its new electric super saloon, AMG has said it plans to use axial-flux electric motors. This type of motor is already used by the Lamborghini Temerario and the McLaren Artura, and it is capable of delivering a hard-to-beat blend of power density, compact dimensions and low weight.
For now, the maximum number of motors remains unknown - two, three? - but it seems likely that outputs of 1000 hp or more will be on the table.
Reveal timing and the SUV follow-up
All that is left is to wait a few more weeks for the full reveal. In parallel, Mercedes-AMG already has a second model under development using the same formula, but in an SUV shape. Even so, the first to arrive will be this electric GT 4-door. The SUV will only arrive in 2026.
