Tesla chief Elon Musk has once again confirmed that production of the autonomous Cybercab taxi will begin in April 2026. This is his third statement to the same effect within the past six months.

According to Musk, the Cybercab will come with neither a steering wheel nor pedals. The vehicle is being designed from the outset as a fully self-driving model for a robotaxi service. Tesla said in December 2025 that it was testing the production system, and in January and February 2026 Musk reiterated that assembly is scheduled to start in April.

Cybercab production ramp-up will be slow at first

However, the company’s head cautioned that initial production volumes will be low. He said the Cybercab is following a classic S-shaped launch curve: because the programme involves a large number of new components and manufacturing processes, output at the start will be “very slow”, before rising sharply later on.

Tesla strategy: Cybercab as the centrepiece of autonomous transport

The Cybercab is seen as a crucial part of Tesla’s strategy in autonomous mobility. The company is betting on robotaxis as one of its development priorities among new cars 2026.

Musk has previously announced launch timelines for other projects, including the Roadster and Semi, only for them to be delayed. Even so, in the case of the Cybercab he has now publicly cited April 2026 several times as the date production will begin.
