The entry-level versions of the fully electric Ford Explorer and Ford Capri have just been updated with a new battery chemistry. The most noticeable outcome is a range increase of roughly 17% - around 70 km for the standard version of both models.

New LFP battery brings more range to the Ford Explorer and Ford Capri

Following this change, the Standard Range Ford Explorer is now rated for up to 444 km (previously 378 km), while the Standard Range Ford Capri now reaches 464 km (previously 393 km). This extra range comes from a new LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery.

According to Jon Williams, General Manager of Ford Blue and Model e in Europe, “with the new LFP battery technology, we’re increasing range and durability while keeping the models affordable for our customers”.

Ford says the key driver behind the switch is the greater longevity offered by this solution, alongside reduced reliance on raw materials. In addition, LFP batteries can be charged to 100% more frequently without major concerns about degradation of this crucial component.

Charging performance stays the same

On the charging side, Ford has not announced any changes, so the figures are expected to remain at 145 kW on direct current (DC) and 11 kW on alternating current (AC).

Further updates

Beyond the new battery, the Ford Explorer and Capri also receive improved performance through an electric motor update. In the Standard Range versions, maximum output rises from 170 to 190 hp and torque increases to 350 Nm - a gain of around 10%.

With these updated figures, the 0 to 100 km/h sprint now takes just 8s, compared with the 8.7s recorded before this update.

When will it arrive?

Ford has not yet confirmed launch dates for these updated versions, nor pricing. At present, the Capri with the 52 kWh battery and 170 hp starts at 41 105 euros, while the equivalent Explorer has an entry price of 39 055 euros.

The more powerful variants of both models - with 286 hp and 340 hp - keep the same specifications as before.
