Problemas nos motores PureTech 1.0 e 1.2 da Stellantis: os anos afetados e o que fazer

These engines are everywhere: fitted to dozens of models, sold in their millions across Europe, and a familiar sight on UK roads. Yet many drivers still aren’t aware that Stellantis’ PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 units-despite their solid reputation for efficiency, low running costs and wide availability-also come with a technical track record that deserves attention. The risk is concentrated in engines built between 2014 and 2022.

The issues mainly concern the EB2DT and EB2ADTS (internal codes for the 1.2 PureTech turbo) plus some EB0 (1.0 naturally aspirated) engines, and are linked to units produced between April 2014 and June 2022. According to Stellantis, engines manufactured after that point already include improvements that addressed the reported weaknesses and are not affected.

In this table, we’ve gathered all Stellantis models that, between April 2014 and June 2022, may be covered by a recall operation (recall) or a warranty extension:

More models use PureTech petrol engines-such as the Jeep Avenger or the FIAT 600-but they’re not included in this group because they already use the improved (post-June 2022) version of the engine.

In 2023, Stellantis introduced a hybrid variant that launched a new evolution of the PureTech engine: it stopped using a timing belt and moved to a chain. Find out more details:

O que está em causa?

Over the last few years, reports have piled up of abnormal oil consumption and premature timing belt failures. The belt issue is especially sensitive because it runs immersed in oil-unlike traditional belts-which means it can degrade quietly and shed debris that clogs lubrication circuits. In more serious cases, the engine can ultimately fail.

Given the volume of cases, Stellantis adopted two measures:

  • Extension of the warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, applicable to customers who have followed the maintenance plan strictly
  • Retroactive compensation for repairs between 2022 and 2024, provided the work was carried out by authorised workshops and in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.

There is even an official online platform-stellantis-support.com-where customers can submit their cases, with documentation and prior registration.

Problema pode ser resolvido

Despite the understandable frustration many owners feel, it’s worth stating clearly that not every engine will develop faults. When monitored, properly serviced, and with the timing belt replaced at the correct intervals (now brought forward to 60,000 km), PureTech units can still be efficient engines.

Even so, Stellantis announced it will extend its compensation policy to European customers affected by PureTech engine issues: this includes the previous-generation 1.0 and 1.2 engines, also known as EB. This comes in addition to the extended warranty programme introduced in March 2024.

It’s essential that any work follows the recommended procedures. Replacing the timing belt requires, for example, careful attention to the oil specification used and meticulous cleaning of the circuits-otherwise the issue can return.
